Stick Tips

I made it back to Louisiana from New Hampshire. I learned a lot and met all good people. The last day I was there I met with John Witt of Goodspeed Machine Co. He's a very knowledgeable man on the Goodspeed, the Coyer and the Intorex Lathes. Learned a bit of history and had some lunch. He gave me some tips on the Goodspeed FH and let me know that Maynard Machine Tool would be sold first of the year, probably by the end of November. That means I have to make some choices and do some 'cipherin' on what model tips to put on sticks. Right now! Also how I can get the most amount of tips out of the least amount of knives and templates.

Those of you that read this, what model tip do you like to use on a stick -acorn, teardrop, ball, oval, barrel- and, briefly, why?

Also, what about either a standard taper with balance and weight or a shorter taper
more forward weight?

Even if you just let me know what make/model stick you use.

I have my reasons for using certain stick tips. I'm looking for some input, so drop a comment.

'til later,
Frank

I love a round tip, short taper. I like round tip because it always hits the head with the same surface area no matter the angle of the stick. I like weight forward so that for faster songs I can choke up a little and for faster songs have power all in one stick......but i will play with a tree branch!

I use the Pete Erskine Ride Stick by Vic and have for a few years now. Balanced taper with a Teardrop tip. Fairly pointed at the very tip as well.

I like a rounded tip cause I use those fatback sticks by Vater a lot, alternate between wood & nylon tips.

frank,

I use the small ball tip for a refined touch and a more ovular tip for a range of touch. I like a standard taper, and habe been using vic firth fir years and Vater since they came out. On stick weights, I like to warm up with a heavy stick.

I like Pro Mark and Vater sticks, really any drum sticks that have a good feel. I usually gravitate toward the Pro Mark Oak 747, Hickory 5B. Both sticks are oval tip. Recently in the last few months I have been suggested the Vater Studio Drumsticks which have a good balance and length the barrell tip sounds good. Also Frank great website. I think its great that you have setup shop. Cant wait to see some of the things you do. Cheers.
